SHAFT Episode #1

Surprise! SHAFT is now a video podcast. We will still be putting out a weekly episode at about 30-45 minute a piece. Below is an FAQ for the new show since there have been quite a few questions.

Will there be an audio version?

Yes. In the next few weeks, we will be posting an MP3 version of the show that is audio only. Keep in mind this is a direct rip of the audio from the video show. So if there are sudden transitions or silence for a clip, it will be reflected. For the most part it should be fine.

Though keep your eyes peeled for Feburary’s 132 Productions Update, there may be something in there for you audio anime fans.

Will this go up on iTunes?

Yes. Once we refinish the site, we will be posting the video version of the podcast in the current SHAFT feed. An additional feed will be created for the MP3 version of the show.

Will the show be viewed live over UStream/Livestream?

Not currently, and probably not at all. There are a lot of logistical reasons for this change which came from converting to video.

How will fan interaction work on the new show?

Much like it did from the original. We love having listener.. now viewer emails, twitter comments, blog comments and so on. Your emails keep the show rolling, the more emails we get the more content there will be to work with on the show, so be sure to send in your email!

Will there be more blog content?

Not more, but our existing blog content will be updated more constantly. Con-Goers will be up each and every Saturday, period. SHAFT will be up every Tuesday or Wednesday. While a recording schedule is in place, a release schedule has not been finalized. In a perfect world we want to be able to have new 132 Productions content each and every day(or at least each and every weekday). We are working on where SHAFT will fall into on this schedule. However, as for AMV Alert! and Turning Japanese, these will return after the site has been changed over to the new format. These columns will more or less be the same however.

Where is the Code Geass review you promised us?

I can tell you its been recorded. Sadly it is in editing limbo much like a few of our other projects. It will be up soon, and if its worth the wait is probably going to be up to you.

Keep in mind much like the first 13 or so of our audio episodes, the first 10 or so of the videos are going to be a work in progress. For now we’re recording in what we are calling the ‘SHAFT bunker’, but there are big changes in the works including a new set, episodes on location(though Anime Boston 2010 will probably be our first ‘on location’ episodes, though we’re planning for additional cons this year), feature segments(the first of its kind will be in episode 2) and for the first time ever a real SHAFT theme song(which will also hopefully be in episode 2). So keep hanging in there, we have a lot of good ideas and they’re slowly being put into practice.

Yea, we’re finding that a lot of people are wanting an audio version of the show to remain. 2 things.

1. We’re working on making audio only versions of the show in MP3 format available to the everyone. If anyone is familiar with Diggnation at Revision3, they do a similar method.. video and audio. Keep in mind however, that you may be missing a lot from listening to the audio only portion of the show, so be sure to watch the podcast as well.

2. People interested in audio podcasts about anime should also check out February’s 132 Productions YouTube update and the ADD Network.

There will be a notice on the ADD Network when the mp3 version is up, right?

I can understand your eagerness to embrace vidoe and audio, but ya gotta remember that, even today, more people listen to an i-pod than watch it. Ya gotta go with what your audience wants more than what is the latest tech (kinda like how Beta was technologically more advanced, but everyone bought VHS machines :) )

Of course. New and old show notes will be updated with the MP3 links as they become available, just like they will be when MP4 videos become available. That goes for here AND the ADD Network.

Its not more about embracing the latest tech so much as attempting to fill an empty void. Aside from Anime TV and Animecons.com’s podcast… can you really think of an anime video podcast? Can you think of an anime podcast with our format? Anime is a more visual format and its time to take that fact into account. We’re not just listening to the people who like the new video format, but the people who miss the MP3’s. We’re checking the downloads and streaming views closely to see which is getting more attention.

There IS another anime podcast in the works by us that is audio only. It will contain a completely different and unique format then the one that SHAFT has done over the last three years. It will also bring our contributors back into the fold as well. However, our format is not final yet and there are a few more details to hammer out before we launch.

We’re not attempting to leave our established fan base out in the cold, however finding new listeners and expanding our community is something that we’ve wanted to do for a while and a video version is something that will do that.

However, I will admit that we are highly invested in producing video content as well as audio content. But at this stage in the game(especially in the case of SHAFT), it really is one step at a time.
